CHRISTIAN M. WHITE

Born in 1962 on Haida Gwaii, Christian White has been a working Haida Artist for the past 45 years. His formative training began at the age of 14; apprenticing under his father, he started carving Argillite, a black slate, which he continues to carve to this date.

Through the years, Christian has been afforded the opportunity to immerse himself in a variety of projects employing other materials, including a number of large scale pieces in cedar; specifically canoes and totem poles.

As an active member of the Haida community and culture, Christian has participated in numerous traditional ceremonies over the years. He is a major contributor and cultural conservationist within the Village of Old Massett as exhibited by his construction of a traditional Longhouse and hosting of Haida celebrations. As well as participating in the Repatriation of ancestral remains that were returned to the Haida Nation from a variety of institutions found around the World and finally laid to rest in their natural homelands.

Christian also began a Haida Art apprenticeship program to train young artists. Dedicated to the preservation of Haida culture and keen to pass on his acquired knowledge and skills, he continues to teach enthusiastic young Haida men and women the art of their ancestors, guiding them through the creation of such projects as painted cedar wall screens, paddles, bentwood boxes, ceremonial masks and printmaking projects. Through the study of ancestral designs and hands-on approach, the apprentices acquire knowledge and skill to further their abilities and understanding of the art, while the community retains the works of art to be used in ceremonies and celebrations, known as the Potlatch.
